When Should You Bring Your Child for Their First Dental Visit?

“First Tooth First Visit”

According to the Canadian Dental Association, your child’s first dental visit should be within six months after the appearance of the first tooth, or by the time they are one year of age at the latest.

Infants do not usually have teeth until they are between 6 and 9 months of age, but any age is possible!

The goal is for your child to visit the dentist before there is a problem.

Reasons to take your child for dental examinations:

  • You can find out if the cleaning routine you follow at home is effective.
  • Your dentist can identify problems right away and treat them.
  • Your child can learn that going to the dentist helps prevent problems.
  • Your child will become familiar with the environment and procedures involved in oral health care.

Your child’s first visit is an introduction to help your child feel comfortable with the care team. Depending on your child’s age, this visit may include a full examination of the teeth, gums, bite, and oral tissues to assess growth and development. Depending on the age, development, and comfort level of your child, a cleaning may also be completed; this will include polishing and removal of plaque, tartar, and accumulated stains. X-ray imaging may also be completed if needed to assess areas between teeth for cavities, or to assess tooth development.  The dentist and care team will discuss and demonstrate oral hygiene practices and make any other individualized recommendations.

How to Prepare for the First Visit

We aim to make it fun and memorable!

Try playing “dentist” at home before your visit. Count your baby or child’s teeth, then switch roles and let them count yours. Make the routine fun and explain that this is what the dentist will do. Build excitement for the process.

Remember that your feeling toward dental visits may be quite different from your child’s. Give moral support and encouragement.

Scheduling morning appointments for younger children can be helpful to ensure that they are alert and fresh for their visit.

Children’s mouths change quickly. Like adults, children should see the dentist every 6-9 months. This helps to build your child’s confidence and also allows your dental care team to identify problems like tooth decay or jaw development concerns early.
